Riebeek Kasteel

Hi GSM fans, This is not a newsletter; it serves only to bring you up to speed on the happenings around the local branch, and mainly to give Martin Kruger something to add to our website! We honestly don’t want him to get the impression that we have actually closed down. Our new social committee has surprised me by almost immediately, at very short notice, arranged a “fun run” to Riebeek Kasteel, with a fabulous lunch at the Pleasant Pheasant. This event took place on the 8th August. The weather didn’t play along. This was the day that finally saw our WP drought broken, so no “fun run.” Most of the 29 that attended went in fancy modern cars, leaving Peanuts and John, Zim and Martie the only tough ones to go in GSM’s. Peanuts and John in his Dart, without side screens. They say that over 140km/hr no rain gets into the car! Ja well no fine! Zim and Martie in the Flamingo had no problems and with the new diff ratio, they had a lovely comfortable cruise. Esta and Dave, in the completely open Morgan were not all that lucky. Quite a bit of water was able to make its way into the little cockpit, but they are younger at heart than most, and have often been in similar situations. With the right clothes………….no problem! At the Pleasant Pheasant, with a roaring fire in the hearth and a capacity dining room, tremendous food and good wine, a fabulous time was had by all. Thanks Esta, we are looking forward to our next outing. Incidentally, the scenery along the way is stunning. (Even Clarry in his BMW enjoyed it.) The next happening, on Thursday after Ladies Day, saw Peanuts and I taking Clarry’s Dart and Bob’s Flamingo to the S.A. Inventions Show at Canal Walk. Getting the cars into the MTN Sciencentre auditorium was a major operation. It is a very interesting display of inventions, and certainly worthwhile. We shall be organizing a “Club day.” Will keep you posted. I attended the opening with Laura, one of Bobs’ daughters, and I am sorry that Bob himself could not make it. I am fortunate to have been present at similar launches of Darts and Flamingos in the late fifties and early sixties, and this was exactly like in the old days………..! Everyone wanted to buy a Dart of a Flamingo, and those that didn’t want to buy, wanted to start building them again! Why was the factory closed? Why are the cars not being exported? What is wrong with you guys? Get your backsides in gear! Make a plan! Who knows…………maybe one day……….? Seventy thousand people are expected to see the expo between now and 31st December. Real MEGA exposure! Thanks guys for your cars. We have two fantastic examples on display at present. We have arranged that they will be replaced by other cars, kindly phone Peanuts for info. Arrangements for Bob’s birthday are progressing well. Please don’t forget the 5th September at Bobs home in Hout Bay. |
