GSM CAR CLUB OF SOUTH AFRICA

GSM NEWSFLASH

10 December 2007

Yesterday The Pot Belly Kitchen saw 40 GSM members and friends converge on it in no uncertain manner for a Breakfast Run! Arriving in 11 Darts, two Flamingos, one Morgan, one Lotus 7, one Mini and various other forms of transport ranging from a Uno to a bakkie and even the odd BMW convertible and a “lani” 4x4 from various directions.

The Somerset West convoy fortunately never met up with the Parow convoy, thus saving the traffic police, who were out in force, some hassles. We encountered three parked police vehicles parked along the N1! Possibly we should register with them next time we go on a run, just to be on the safe side.

Whether the Jubilee had some effect or not we can not be sure, but some extremely neat cars appeared and looked very good reversed parked inline in front of the restaurant! The yellow racing Dart of Johan Walters looked beautiful with its racing number on the side. It drew plenty of attention from the public too. Welcome Johan! Great to see you recovering from a nasty spell. We hope you will soon be well, doing good lap times once again at Killarney! Clive Spolander’s car, with a new paint job even was not recognized by its previous owner who claims, and is probably correct, knows more about Darts than anyone else. Deon and Anna Smit, our hosts for the event has got their Dart really striking as well! Similarly Willie and Tina Meissner brought their Dart in all its new splendor also! Great stuff guys! Keep it up.

Once again, the time of year must carry the blame for a few of the regulars not being able to make it due to festive season commitments. I am sure we will have them present at the next run in March. This event is planned closer to Hout Bay, so that Uncle Bob can join in the fun! Watch this space for further details. The date for George has also changed. It is the 2nd and 3rd of February. It is the same weekend as the Piper racing in Zwartkops. It will once again be great if we can all meet in George from all over the country like we did for the Jubilee.

The breakfast itself was great! No shortage of champagne, good food, good service and tremendous company at a lovely venue proved to be the correct ingredients for a memorable get together. Thanks Deon, Anna and Johan. Unfortunately I had to return to the grindstone around noon, but I believe that a tour of the premises later proved very interesting. With a staff compliment of around 120 it is not a small business! Combined with the restaurant there is a butchery, a fruit and veg packing facility and “home industry” sales! Some lucky people even walked of with quite a few Avos!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all and their families! See you in 2008!

Kind regards
Piet van Niekerk
