Cars in the Park - Pietermaritzburg

On the 16 May 2008 Peanuts and myself decided to fly to Durban for the “Cars in the Park’’ in Pietermaritzburg. I have never been and I wanted to see what it was all about. I don’t like flying and to make matters worse I hear on the news an engine had just fallen off a plane and another plane went off the run way. I ask Peanuts can’t we maybe drive to Durban and he said sure, we can go through the Transkei. Well, we did that in January, so no thank you. After having a stiff drink we boarded the plane to Durban. Once you are on the plane of course you are fine so long as you don’t think about how many ft you’re up in the sky, block out anything you have heard on the news and I had to try forget what I had read in a book called “Air Babylon” Two hours later having arrived safely in Durban we headed for the home and guest house of David Hoal where we stayed for the night. David is a member of the GSM Club and owns the famous John Truter Dart. The next morning we headed for Pietermaritzburg to meet Grenville Manton who is also a member of our club and owns the well know Peter Woolridge racing Dart. Grenville arranged a braai on the Saturday night by his daughters home were we stayed. There we met famous racing drivers Pat Duckham, John Truter, Keith Berrington Smith. What a great evening with truly great people. On Sunday we headed for the “Mayors Garden” for the Cars in the Park. There were plenty cars at the show. About 1000 cars from 23 clubs participating. Show seems to have more street rods than vintage and classis cars. It was sad that there was only one Dart on display which was Grenville’s Dart. After the show we went back to David’s house to spend the night there and left 4.30 the next morning for the airport to fly back to Cape Town.
