Parow High
School Concourse
On Saturday, 1st November
2008 we were invited by Cape Town Street Rods to attend
their annual show at the Parow High School. It is the third
time this invitation has been extended, and this time our
very active chairman thought it would be an appropriate time
to make use of this event to run a separate concourse for
the GSM Club. A tremendous idea it proved to be. The venue
is virtually right next to Voortrekker Road Parow, opposite
the New National Hotel, and any activity attract lots of
spectators. Entrance was a very reasonable R10,00, if you
were an exhibitor, entrance was free, and I think the show
was well attended.
Unfortunately, our
chairman could not attend, as he was entered in the
Crankhandle Club’s annual Houw Hoek run with his very pretty
and original 1969 R100 Mazda Rotary. One of only a few
imported into S.A. and probably the only one still running.
Rose, his wife, acted as navigator and they held the name of
the GSM Club high, by finishing in midfield, and having a
ball.
Peanuts lent us his also very pretty and original GSM Dart
to display at the show, and also Rose’s recently restored
GSM Flamingo, also in fantastic condition. The GSM part of
the show on that day, took up almost the entire west
boundary of the field, with 17 cars, including for the first
time, a Flamingo from Natal, new to the Cape. It is the
powder blue car of Deon Smit brought to the Cape. After
driving a few Flamingo’s at the Pot Belly Pantry recently he
decided he needed his own one. This car is still in the care
of Clarry Tayor, as Deon bought it before completion of the
KZN project. I am sure that even the good work started in
KZN, will be completed by Clarry in his meticulous way and
the original owner and Deon will be very happy and proud of
his new and very neat Flaming, as a sister car to his
already lovely Dart. I suppose Annatjie will be driving the
Flamingo in future.
Apart from a good attendance of GSM, very well assisted by
our Somerset West contingent, our show took the form of a
Concourse. All the cars were beautiful, clean and well
prepared. Reg Farrow and Alf Todd had their Hayden Darts
there as well.
