George Motor Show - 30 January 2009

On the 30th January 2009, 4 Darts, 4 Flamingos and one Hayden Dart left Cape Town for the George Motor Show.

Piet in Colin Smith’s Flamingo. Peanuts & James in John Phillip’s Flamingo. Mias in his Dart. Gawie in JR’s Levy Dart. Ronnie & Geoff in Fouche Engineering bakkie with all the “goodies” towing Peanuts Dart. Rose and Marlene in Rose’s Flamingo. Andre and Marianne towing Deon’s Dart. Reg drove his Hayden Dart. Hein towed his Flamingo up on a trailer. At Swellendam we caught up with Neville driving his Levy Dart from Laingburg. He had his son Shane with him and his cousin Ben also came along in his own car.

Dave and Esta also left Cape Town in their Morgan driving quite fast I must say. What fun people they are.

The Somerset West contingent left with 4 Darts and one Flamingo with Clarry towing his Dart. Deon towing his Flamingo. Willie towing his Dart. Vic towing his Dart. Tim driving his Dart from Greyton.

The drive to George went very well. Ronnie was probably a bit disappointed because no cars broke down. He had after all packed a rather large tool box incase anyone had a spot of trouble. I lead the convoy from Swellendam which explains the discipline of the other drivers except when Piet came flying past me at one stage due to a lack of patience and having to “dice” Reg in his Hayden Dart.

At Groot Brak River we turned off to go visit Jeff and Rea Levy. Well, he did invite us to stop on our way for a beer but I think it was a bit of a shocker when we arrived at his door step and there was so many of us. He probable thought one or two of us would come, not a street full of GSM Darts and Flamingo and bakkies and other road cars. We will see if he invites us again next year.

We booked a few chalets at the Pine Lodge where we met up with Arno and Petro from Uitenhage with their Flamingo. Stef and Judy from their dairy farm outside of Uitenhage with their Flamingo. Ron from East London with his Flamingo. The rumor is he drives far to fast that is why his wife Lyn did not come with this time and not forgetting Hendrik with his Flamingo all the way from Tarkastad.

What can I say. Are the GSMers a great crowd or what. I believe everyone had a good weekend. Lots of talking going on. Lots of snoring in the men’s chalet I was told, except for Piet of course. A lot of the wives could not make it but we hope this will change next year. It is a family club, not so.

Sunday we packed up and headed in our different direction. Some only left the Monday. Some stayed over in other towns on their way home. Some went back via Worcester and some got caught in the traffic for hours in Somerset West.
Needless to say a great weekend and thanks to those that went to the time and trouble to make our club look great at the George Motor Show.

Can’t wait for next year.

Cheers
Rose
