GSM CAR CLUB OF SOUTH AFRICA

13 May 2004
Newsletter No: 16

Hi GSM fans

Just in case anyone thinks that Christmas has arrived, two newsletters almost in the same month…..,no, not quite, just that your secretary thought that a “report back” on the meeting at Bob’s home on the 2nd May might not be a bad idea.

The Sunday dawned, a bright beautiful windless day as perfect as only days in the Western Cape can be in winter! Guest (members old and new) started arriving, Willie Visagie started the fire, cars were parked in a row, (two Flamingos and six Darts) and the show was on the road! An attendance register did the rounds, signed by around fifty, people mingled and talked, then Peanuts decided it was time for a formal meeting.

Just before the meeting started, “inputs to GSM Club Meeting” was circulated. This well written circular pointed out that while W-Cape section was quite active, that some “right things were done” and while all the efforts put in the running the club were appreciated, it was just possible that the “right things were not done right” It also became abundantly clear that we had very little chance of succeeding as a club, if we did not have a constitution.

Peanuts at great length and in masterly fashion set about analyzing our membership. Gist of the matter is that while we can count fifty signatures on an attendance register, this boils down to possibly fifteen or twenty real members, together with their wives and children. This makes us a small club, and with it goes the aches and pains of trying to do what large clubs easily are able to do.

We appreciate the fact that some of our members have been unreasonably expected to carry the can when it comes to shows and exhibitions, and for that, we apologize! Once when we started off, we battled to get three cars together. This has greatly improved, as we can now get almost ten! As time goes by, this will again change and improve. If anyone thinks it’s a bind and a “schlep” to get a car prepared and to go to a show, try running this show for a year or two! Attached please find a copy of the GSM Club of S.A constitution, drawn nearly thirty years ago, on the 28 May 1978.

The club has been invited to participate in “Classics in the Bay.” Dieter Losskarn, a resident of Hout Bay is arranging this on the grounds of the Droonendal School Sunday 3rd October, from 10am to 5pm. We have agreed to take part, possibly with three spaces. (A Dart, a Flamingo and something in the process of being restored) A second invite was received from “Beetle Parade,” in Uitenhage, 18th to 20th June. Too soon and too far, so that has been declined with thanks. Anyone that would like to attend in Uitenhage, accommodation at R60.00 per person can be obtained. Should be a lekker weekend away!

We have secured the Multicar Club House for a meeting on 23 June 2004, at 08.00pm to discuss all the above and anything else that could be of interest. Your presence is of utmost importance and will be appreciated.

Kind regard

Piet van Niekerk
