GSM CAR CLUB OF SOUTH AFRICA 24 February 2005 Hi all GSM Members and Fans, Our last communication mainly served to inform about the Xmas Party. Well as you all know, it was a tremendous success! Thanks a million to all that were involved in getting almost seventy of us together at a terrific venue, and congratulations! Fittingly, the gathering was used to honour and thank certain people for work behind the scenes and continued support during 2004. Trophies were awarded in different categories, such as
Since Peanuts started the W.P. chapter of this club, it has tried to attend as many of the shows as possible. I believe this has put a tremendous strain on especially the members who diligently and regularly prepare and bring their cars to these shows, and the behind the scenes efforts, which involve especially Peanuts and Rose. Well, what is the point? Without fear of contradiction I maintain that these shows have turned around the image of our club and the GSM marque as such. Five years ago a Dart of Flamingo could be virtually picked up for a couple of rand. That no longer is true. Your car has virtually tripled in value, and has become a genuine blue chip investment and a collector’s item that is also Africana. Thanks Peanuts! Take a bow! In a weak moment Peanuts promised Chris Harris (the organizer) that Louis Buys will not be the only GSM-torch bearer at the George show in 2005. Please pardon the cliché but “Due to circumstances beyond our control” this newsletter is more than slightly late! The year started at an unbelievable pace! If somebody does not put the brakes on ……. It will be Christmas again very soon. The George show is history! We thought that if we could have six or seven cars at George it would be wishful thinking, but tremendous. Peanuts went to a lot of trouble to personally phone everybody he could think of that had a car that would make there. Much to his surprise, when one phones to invite people to Riebeeck Kasteel, it was too far, but to George ……, everybody wanted to go! Is there a lesson to be learnt in that? And if so what is the lesson? Initially, it seemed that we would have no less than eleven cars making the trip. Thanks very much for your enthusiasm and willingness to assist. I don’t think you realize how grateful an organizer can become with such commitment and willingness. It shows what quality members we have! Great stuff all of you that wanted to go. Unfortunately, life is not always a bed of roses, and some of the people who were willing to go could eventually not make it. Fact is that we managed to have eight cars on our stand. More than we would envisage. Three Flamingos and five Darts. The Flamingos were Zim Geldenhuys, Bob van Niekerk and Ron Langfield, who towed his car all the way from East London. This car is also red, and in magnificent condition, inside and out also the engine bay. A car that does the owner and the club proud. The Darts were Louis, Peanuts, Rose in Jeff‘s Levy Dart, Clarry and Mias with Bob van Niekerk’s Dart. Together with Peanuts’ albums, and a few Gazebos the eight cars looked great and created unusual interest. Driving up from Bellville, in convoy was lots of fun as well. I am sure that next year we will have a larger collection in preparation for Gariep in 2007. May I also ask you guys to assist Peanuts with the compiling of the GSM Register? We need to know where and how many cars are determined. This also helps to answer questions from prospective buyers. There are plenty guys that want to buy cars, and one cannot always remember who would like to sell. Please fax the details of your car and as much of its present and past as you can trace. Fax no 021 930 6455. This year Cars in the Castle is on 12th March. Please guys; once again we need you and your cars. This show is by invitation only and we don’t want to be left out. Please let us know soon what your plans are. Just in closing, thanks again, even our new members Gideon, John Bam and John Damant, for your support. We cannot do with out you! We need you big-time! Then, remember that around Easter or just before in 2007, we will be gathering for GSM's 50th Anniversary at GARIEP DAM. Our goal is 100 cars at Gariep in 2007. It sounds a long way off, and it is………, but just think how short 2004 proved to be! Only the other day we were wondering whether the sun would rise on 1st January 2000, and that is five years ago folks! Remember the Millennium and Y2K and computers. Kind GSM greetings until next time. Piet van Niekerk We have a Flamingo chassis
