GSM CAR CLUB OF SOUTH AFRICA

Newsletter No 28
18 March 2007

Now we are only FIVE months away from the GOLDEN JUBILEUM!!!

A mountain of work lies ahead! The good news, however, is that it seems we are going to cope.

Our book, “The Real GSM Story” by Sandy Brunette is at the printers! The draft copy, about 70 000 words and more or less 200 pictures, has been read and approved by a panel and hopefully it will be for sale at the function.

Once again, and on your behalf, I would like to note a very big, tremendous THANK YOU to Peanuts and the Fouché family who have advanced/guaranteed the more than R115 000 (excluding VAT) to the publisher! Although we run a solvent club, it is not able to raise the funds on its own and as on many occasions in the past, though on a much smaller scale, Peanuts has come to the rescue! NEVER FEAR WHEN PEANUTS IS NEAR!!!

This book of around 200 pages of very interesting pictures and a story extremely well told by a hands-on ex-employee of GSM will, without any doubt, become a COLLECTORS ITEM OF NOTE!

It will be of good quality, well bound, hard cover, on good paper. Something to be proud of as a club and as an owner, should you be fortunate enough to procure one of the only 1000 numbered and signed (by Bob van Niekerk) copies!

We already have orders from Canada, where they are raced in historic events and England where the Deltas were built. The idea is to sell it at R250 which will enable us to pay Peanuts back and allow a profit for the club.

My order has been placed and it has been paid for! The idea was not to set an example or extort money from you, but I would not like to miss the boat! How about it folks? We can do with the funds. Money received in the above manner can be placed in a trust account so that you can be refunded if the book does not materialise. I shall keep you in the loop as we progress.

Besides and apart from the book, we thought that we would also like to sell other memorabilia at the Jubileum to you and to members of the public who may be interested. GSM key rings, GSM licence holder discs, GSM flags, GSM ballpoint pens, GMS T-shirts, GSM golf shirts, GSM caps, GSM mouse pads and if you have any more ideas please phone Rose and let’s talk about it!

This venture will also help club funds and needs to be financed upfront. The club could possible manage on its own if…..YOU PAY YOUR SUBS NOW!!!! Our annual subs are not expensive – R100 for a single member and R150 for dual membership and I am well aware of the fact that they are only due by the end of June but I think you will realise we can do with the money earlier. A VERY LARGE THANK YOU to you guys as well, in anticipation! THANKS again!

Con Joubert, from Bloemfontein, will be visiting at the end of this week! I know it is short notice, but we have not had a “social run” for some time. Let’s go for breakfast on the 25th. Con can give us a talk on all the Flamingos he has owned, and you fellas can ask questions!

We will all be phoned with accurate details not later than Wednesday 21st.

Now a gripe! Something I would like to get off my chest! Our club functions rather well, pardon me for saying so my self, but you are free to disagree if you wish. This is probably due to the many hours Peanuts and I spend debating and talking about club matters. We realized that never mind how much we talk, we can not successfully run this club without you and your presence and input. Thank you for your loyalty and support! We unfortunately also have a “loose cannon” in our ranks! No name shall be mentioned, and although this person probably means well, and has at times done a lot for the club, but has also introduced himself as the Chairman on occasions, and caused us to possibly loose L’Ormarins as a venue for the Jubileum. I am sure you will agree we do not need people like that in our Club. People who act on their own initiative are not welcome! If I could, I certainly would not accept his membership fee for 2007/2008. Nothing should happen in this club that Peanuts, our elected Chairman, does not sanction! Please!

Dr Ted Cardin, from Los Angeles owns a racing stable. Among his cars he has a Delta; an Alfa engined GSM Dart, painted green and Gold, S.A. racing colours as well as a Lotus 7 and some other cars. He is rather fond of his Dart and regularly blows the opposition off in historic races with it. He is not a youngster; we have photos of him driving GSM 4, the Delta Bob raced in England so successfully in the 60’s. The good news is that he will be attending the Jubileum too! Probably with his car, but that has not been confirmed.

Please pardon the gripe! See you on Sunday!

Kind regards

Piet
