GSM CAR CLUB OF SOUTH AFRICA

21 April 2008
NEWSLETTER NO: 31/2008

Hi all GSM fans

Just as you were about to come to the conclusion that the Club has finally gone “belly up,” a newsletter arrives out of the blue!

Kindly accept my apologies for the deafening silence, but I think that after the frenzy of activity preceding the Jubilee, a lull was to be expected. Since September nothing much happened and the holidays came and went, our chairman had a knee operation but that is about all, and now we are already in the fourth month of 2008!

While thoughts return to the Jubilee, I can’t help wondering what has happened to the cars that almost made it, but just didn’t! Many of us were in virtually the same position. Although the event was planned, and widely publicized for a very long time, pressure of work, financial pressure and lots of other major and minor pressures kept the cars from reaching completion! Which is a pity! But with hind sight, a vast number of cars were pulled out of the cobwebs and work was started on them!

Please may I respectfully request that this work be completed? All, or most of the pressure is now off, take your time and complete what has been started! You will not be sorry once your gleaming GSM is back in pristine condition to be enjoyed as a collector’s item and great investment!

All that must be done then is to let Peanuts have a photo of you and your car for the web site, plus as much history as you can possibly research for the register.

On the 6th May 2008 a “Curator’s Tour” has been arranged at the Franschhoek Motor Museum by Peanuts Fouche. The cost for the tour is R220.00 per person which includes entry to the museum, lunch with wine, close up inspection and start up of vehicles, and a workshop tour. Duration for this tour including lunch is approximately four and a half hours. Only 20 people can go on this tour at a time. Kindly let Rose know if you are interested so she can collect the tour fees.

A few dates to remember are:

1. 26th to 28th April 2008 Gauteng Motor Show at Kyalami.
2. 18th May Pietermaritburg “Cars in the Park” (Peanuts and Rose will be attending)
3. In June the Club subs are due.
4. 27th September – Whales and Wheel Hermanus – We would like to have as many cars as possible.
We missed out last year as we had our Jubilee.
5. 3rd and 4th October – Worcester Motor Show.
6. Very important – 14th November – Our GSM Christmas Party at the Multicar Clubhouse Parow.

Birthdays for this month:

1st April – Piet van Niekerk – 75 year young.
12th April – Bertie Bester
15th April – Dr Con Joubert - Bloemfontein
17th April – Fred Keller – Port Elizabeth
25th April – Martie Geldenhuys
26th April – Koos Swanepoel Snr

One of our Honorary Members Dr Johan Rupert was chosen as Motoring Man of the year by Car Magazine!

The Club, I can assure you has not died, it’s nowhere near dieing scenes. We have found a supplier of ball joints (contact Riaan Nel at 021 552-6188), refurbishing of ball joints as well as steering boxes (Thanks Collin Smit). He also has a gentleman helping us with registering of our GSM cars. His name is Gerry Short. He can be contacted on number 021 7612646 or 082 359 95730. He is an ex senior inspector (Traffic Dept)

Soon we will be having our AGM and I am hoping we can convince Peanuts to continue running the club as he has done for the last years! He has made personal contact with various members in other centers and it is reassuring to know that you can now put faces and personalities to names and call on fellow GSM members when you visit other centers in the country!

We still have some calendars for sale at R100.00. A bit expensive but that is what we had to pay for it. We also have GSM and Levy caps for sale.

In closing the sad news that Gert Le Roux, owner of the black Levy Dart died on the 15th April. Our thoughts and deepest sympathy with his family and friends.

Kind regards and watch this space for news on the next run.
Piet van Niekerk
