GSM CAR CLUB OF SOUTH AFRICA

Newsletter No 32

Hi all GSM Car Club fans

It seem as this chapter of the original GSM Car Club is the only “life” that still remains. We have just had our eighth AGM, and I think that growth has been phenomenal. We started at one of Bob’s birthday with four or five cars at Killarney, seven members and we are now almost 100 members and more than twenty cars, with at least another ten in various stages of reconstruction or renovation.

Most of the credit is due to the Fouche family, with Peanuts heading all activities and thankfully has once again agreed to remain the Chairman for another stint. A stint in this club is like the Presidency in Zimbabwe, also eight years. We are approaching the stage where Peanuts and Rose are becoming a destination, meaning that no one in this club can really call themselves a member if they have not paid a visit to the Fouche Workshop, or home.

Our last AGM was attended by more than fifty people. Our systems are improving and we now have our own cell phone to send urgent news to members. This brings us to a request for annual subs. Please guys/dolls, running this club costs money and while the club has a healthy bank account, we need yours subs for sms’s, phone calls, postage etc….

Peanuts has finished his 1959 Dart 997cc, and one sms to various people at very short notice got eight cars, four Darts and three Flamingo’s and a Morgan to the Pot Belly last Sunday morning for a breakfast. Trevor also arrived a little later in Sydney’s Dart, and a few members came in private ordinary transport. Peanuts maiden voyage in the turquoise Dart was a success.

Our next social run is to Hout Bay for Bobs 80th birthday on the 7th September 2008. We will be meeting at the workshop at 8.30 am. From here we drive to Suikerbossie Restaurant to be there at 9.30am. The cost for this breakfast is R70 per person for an unreal breakfast, NO DOGGIE BAGS. From here we have been invited to David Lyons home to view his magic collection of cars and drink his champagne. We will also have some cake to celebrate Bob’s birthday and hand over the birthday present. If you would like to join us on this day we would appreciate it if you could bring your R70.00 per person to Rose so she knows how many people will be coming for breakfast. Thank you Mr David Lyons.

Soon after this on the 27th September is the Hermanus Whales and Wheels. This has almost become a tradition, some making a weekend of it to escape the traffic on the pass. Let’s really get a good showing of GSM’s to Hermanus. For those staying over the Saturday night we have been invited to join Deon and Annatjie at their camp site in Onrus for a bring and braai. I think this will be great fun! Thank you Mr & Mrs Smit.

The 24th October is the Worcester Car Show, and the 7th November is the “Classis in the Bay” at Hout Bay, and as Bob lives in Hout Bay I cannot imagine a show there with out GSM’s.

1st November is a show at Parow High School, with the Street Rod Club.

In closing, I would like to mention that Peanuts and Rose attended the Cars in the Park Show at Zwartkops recently. Three thousand cars were on display, some worthy of display and other s…… well maybe not such a good plan. This and some conversations with Vaalies pointing out to Peanuts that there are no shows of any significance in the Cape, well, they won’t be able to say that next year. Peanut’s has already approached the Multicar Club, and if they won’t help he will arrange all on his own a show in Cape Town that will make its mark. Would you like to assist? There will be a job for you, and I am sure GSMs will be centre stage, where they belong. I am in Peanuts, what can I help with.

To all that are restoring cars, come on guys, don’t give up, we are eager to see the results, and you will be surprised at the pleasure you will get out of driving your car. We can’t wait to see it.

Kind regards and happy motoring,

Piet
