With
this year racing towards its end, this will be the last
newsletter, but that does not mean a quiet, boring year
end. Our Christmas Party which is being organized by
Deon and Annatjie Smit is looming around the corner on
November 13th, followed immediately by The Cape Classic
Cape Show, which is going to be the grand daddy of
classic shows. Peanuts and Rose is working flat out to
make this dream possible.
Aiming at more than 1000 classics on show, ranging from
cars, motorcycles, racing cars, oval track midgets and
stock cars, model cars, model aircraft, police dog
shows, there will be something of interest to, we hope,
everyone. Old racing drivers, some legends, others just
characters will be in attendance to talk to the public
and autograph memorabilia.
Although the show is on Sunday 15th November, it will
require a monumental effort to place exhibits by 10.00,
so exhibitors are requested to bring, and position, as
many of their cars on Saturday 14th from 12.00 to 18.00.
Security has been arranged for the night. Peanuts is
going to be very, very busy and I am sure can do with a
lot of assistance. Any volunteers will be appreciated
for Saturday and Sunday. Ian, Peanuts and Rose will find
something for you to do! Come on boys and girls; let’s
show what we can do.
This chapter of the GSM club strikes me as one with an
uncanny spirit which prevails. All our meetings and get
togethers are great, like family gatherings! Since
inception, 10 years ago, new members join and
immediately become mates. At our last outing to The Hook
Line and Sinker Willie Meissner was accompanied by his
in laws. I hope they enjoyed the lunch and that we shall
see them again. My daughter, and almost her whole family
of Koegelenbergs including my great-grandson also
attended and enjoyed the atmosphere and lunch. We shall
see them again. Clive & Theresa Spolander brought their
Flamingo, new to them and new to Cape Town.
Coming back to the great classic show, we will have
upcountry members of our chapter of the club, from
Durban David Hoal and Pat Duckham, from East London Ron
& Lyn Langfield with their Flamingo, from Port Elizabeth
Arno & Petro van der Westhuizen, from Tarkastad Hendrik
& Martie Strydom with their Flamingo, from Uitenhage
Stef & Judy Steyn with Flamingo, from Groot Brak Jeff &
Rea Levy with Levy Dart, all part of our “family” and
that’s why I hope they will be in time for the Xmas
party..
Hein van der Watt is in charge not only of the GSM
exhibit, but also of the GSM Concourse. This will be for
the car that appears the best, and has the greatest
spectator appeal. John Bam will be unveiling his very
beautiful Alfa Flamingo that he has been working on for
almost six years. I shall not be surprised if there are
other “unveilings” too. Lots of secret work going on all
over the place. Don’t miss this! Those bringing their
cars, please remember your FIRE EXTINGISHERS.
After the show, a well earned rest for all the hard
workers, until next year starts off with the George
Motor Show, just before the Classic car race at
Killarney with Lola T 70, GT 40 and possibly David Piper
with his Ferraris and Porsches too. A flying start to
2010 or what?
In closing a very happy birthday to our oldest and
dearest member Jack Holloway who turns 83 on 28th
November! May he celebrate many more with us, without
any pitstops along the way!
Compliments of the season to all of you, I am sure I
will see you often between now and New Year!
Kind regards
Piet van Niekerk.
