GSM CAR CLUB OF SOUTH AFRICA Newsletter No: 2 Dear GSM owners and
enthusiasts I am pleased to be able to report not only a "follow up", but a rather exciting few months since our last contact. ALMOST ALL OF THE APPLICATION FORMS WE SENT OUT WERE SPEEDILY RETURNED WITH THE MONEY!!!!! All of a sudden, within a few months we have what looks like is going to be a healthy active club, with very enthusiastic members, some who would like us to meet once a week! THANK YOU EVERYONE! We cannot do without you the members! We have a healthy bank account, with ABSA. Thanks to Peanuts who has carried the can for all the expenses like postage, phone calls etc.etc, and his equally enthusiastic wife, Rose, who does all the computer work making membership cards and stationery! Our credit balance at this stage is in excess of R2000,00. The Chairman and Secretary have allowed a few memberships who dont pay subs and/or entrance fee, but I would like to assure you that those people have earned their "stripes" in more ways than one. Our comittee has also grown, with the addition of Willie Meissner Jnr. (Vice Chairman), Sidney Ehrenrich (Technical Consultant) and Clarence Coetzer as Eastern Cape representative. Willie does not need any introduction, Sidney was involved at GSM from the very first day, and probably knows more about the whole "story" than anybody else, and Clarence helps us from afar. Enough history. Bob van Niekerk’s birthday bash at Killarney. our first social gathering, was a tremendous success. Thanks to all who attended and specially to the loyal members who arrived in five Darts, on a real rainy and windy Cape Town day. Members came from far and near, even Marie de Lange, who chaired the original Club in Gauteng for many years from Johannesburg. I will not venture into mentioning names, just in case I forget someone. I would however like to mention that the GSM history was well represented by personalities and often their wives, form wayback, from the very beginning right up to most recent and new members. I thought that renewing old ties, and remembering telling old tales, was thoroughly enjoyed by all! I would like to apologies if anyone was overlooked during our invitation campaign. Please contact us, we would love to have you aboard. One of our new members attended with his replica Dart, and I hope to see more of these owners in future. We were able to present Bob with a caricature sketch, by Rufus Papenfus (ex-commentator at Killarney and Goodwood and famous cartoonist and artist), of himself in his racing Dart, which was signed by all present. Jack Holloway (master of ceremony) made a speech wishing Bob, and the rest to the day was spent talking, eating (a little) and quenching thirsts. The l0:00 am start worked well and the stragglers left at 19:00 hrs when the Clubhouse closed. Our next event will be the KFM Motor Show at the Bellville Velodrome from 4th to 8th October. This is a charity show for The Red Cross Childrens Hospital. Our chairman has managed to book a stall in the main hall. Here we plan to have a static display of a few cars, Darts and Flamingos, a number of interesting photos, a chassis or two and scrapbooks of the development history. Should anyone be able to assist with enlarging photos, ofjust manning the stall, please phone Peanuts. Secondly there will be a cavalcade of S.A. Car Clubs, starting from different venues around Cape Town. Our GSM club will start from the Engen Garage in Constantia Shopping Centre, and proceed to the Velodrome. The cavalcade will be lead by 48 Harley Davidsons, followed by at least 14 GSM cars, so far we have nine! PLEASE help us and bring as many cars as possible! Thank you in anticipation. Please phone Peanuts, we need to co-ordinate the cavalcade, and if you dont let us know, we wont know! You dont have to be a member, you can join later. Each car will need to contribute a toy car or motorcycle, (not a doll or a teddybear please) for the children in the hospital and R40,00. Most of the money will be donated to the Hospital. The cavalcade will end on the grass area just outside the Velodrome, with an area marked for each club, and a Ghymkana on Sunday afternoon. Come and show the public what your Dart or Flamingo can do! In closing, I wish to congratulate Johan Walters with the success he enjoys racing the Darts at Killarney. Johan has six cars, some of them replicas. Early next month he will be flying our flag, racing at Aldo Scribante circuit in P.E., and I am sure your good wishes go with him. Johan appreciates your support and if you are around the pits on race day, go and give him some encouragement. We have started planning a very exciting outing in November but I will tell you more about it in the next Newsletter. In the meantime, we enclose the Gauteng News with some very interesting news and info, and also what Bob thought of his party at Killarney. A copy of our newsletter goes to them as well. SEE YOU ALL AT THE VELODROME The Secretary |
