GSM CAR CLUB OF SOUTH AFRICA

Newsletter No: 5
17 July 2001

Hi GSM owners and enthusiasts

Newsletter No: 4 ended with the news that Peanuts, our very hard working and thinking Chairman was not well. Gladly I can tell you all that he has completely recovered and back to his old tricks.

Just to dispense with formalities, our Club is still solvent as none of the money in the bank has been spent and all current members are thus enjoying a "subscription holiday" as we have decided not to ask for subs again, or at least not until we can offer you something in return. When I say "something in return" I mean in the way of a fun run or something in our GSM cars! We would like to offer you an event, but we seriously lack reliable road going cars! Bob van Niekerk 2, Sidney Ehrenrich 1. Gert le Roux 1. Johan Walters 2. Willie Meissner 1, Jan Hofmeyer 1, Clarry Taylor 1, Bertie Hester 2, Zini Geldenhuys 1, Hein van der Watt 1 and Jeff Simpson 1.

Please guys, we need cars for fun and we also want the public to see them around to enhance our profile. I promise you, you don’t know how few people really know what a Dart or a Flamingo is! Enough of the moaning.

The Street Rod event went off extremely well and our next event will be Cars at the Castle on the 11 August. You know that the Castle is the oldest building in South Africa and it is impossible to get a private vehicle in to its domain. Just think what an honour it is to be invited to take your own private vehicle in there, and at that the most succesfull of any SA vehicle ever built. We have booked for five cars, but please bring along as many as you can. We will find a spot for them. The cars must be early on Saturday morning, at around 07.30ani. There is only one entrance, and it is only a one way. A fun run will also be held and you may enter.

It feels like only recently we celebrated Bob van Niekerks 72nd birthday at Killarney, but he has completed another lap, again without a pitstop and on the 8th of September, we will be doing the same thing at the same place. Last year a few people who were invited could not attend, but please don’t stand on ceremony, attend this event this year, you have been invited. (A stranger is just a friend you have not met!) Bring and Braai, fires will be made. Cash bar at the Clubhouse.

A new member, Keith Johnson, has bought what we think is the ex Tony Kotze Dart, the first Dart to compete in the 9hr race, still at Grand Central, before Kyalami. I believe Keith is making good progress to get this car going.

Johan Walters has both his cars licensed to run on the road, and he also races them at Killarney, and away, very successfully. At present Johan has last years Sports Car Champion, Andrew Sickler assisting him with the preparation of his cars in the stable. Rumour has it that soon there will be three cars! Come on guys, get those precious things in the garage moving!

Clarry Taylor, has had a fairly lengthy pitstop but he has also recovered and is more motivated than ever to get his Dart going. Watch out for it at the Castle!

Dave and Esther Brown are also threatening to get her Flamingo out of the cobwebs!

John Amm also has a Dart in his collection. Some collection I believe. Come on John, lets see the car too.

André Knoop (Allcast Foundry) has a Flamingo that is being fitted with a new chassis by the Hofmeyers in the Strand This should soon be on the road. Allcast can also supply grilles for Flamingos. For Flamingos who are slightly tired, we have two steering boxes, brand new available. Just phone Peanuts. These boxes are very hard to find or repair. Also five stud Taunus wheels available.

Anyone needing engine mountings, not only for GSMs’ but any old car, if you have the metal bits, and a sample, Ashley Ellis will make a better than new one! Also the rubber suspension "tits" for Minis of Flamingos.

I am making a serious effort to get Fritz le Roux to Bobs party also. Once again, in closing, any photos, racing or not, any progress or any ideas for our club, please let us have them. -

Kind regards
Piet van Niekerk
