GSM CAR CLUB OF SOUTH AFRICA

17 December 2007

NEWSFLASH

Isn’t it amazing how things come to haunt you when you least expect it? Not only was I under the impression that the last GSM NEWSLETTER for 2007 was done and dusted, when I had to invent a method to convey our GSM thanks to our hosts at the Pot Belly Kitchen, as well as to inform our members that were not able to attend what a pleasant experience it was, hence the NEWSFLASH dated 10th December.

Well, less than one week later, I was at home minding my own business when the phone rang and John Bam invited me to his abode for a drink. I have spent many extremely pleasant Saturday afternoon at his home, watching the Flamingo/Alfa taking shape and I gladly accepted his invitation, expecting to find the Flamingo ready for a serious test run, and a braai afterwards, with him and Jan Driedijk!

As you have probably guessed, this visit resulted in this NEWSFLASH dated 17 December 2007! I was greatly mistaken! On arrival a Ohloff Bergh brandy and coke was waiting for me and EISH…..there in all its splendor was John’s latest acquisition….., the V8 Rover engined Hayden Dart from the estate of the late Roger Dowd!

Now what? The way I feel about a Hayden Dart is no secret, and here I am confronted by one, and a good friend who has just become its new proud owner!

I have always maintained that Les Hayden must get full credit for copying the shape of a Dart. He could have chosen any other shape, and his fiberglass quality and finish almost 50 years later is outstanding, with assistance from Keith Bright who built his bodies. The GSM Dart’s secret and success however does not stem only from its shape, but mainly from its suspension and thus road holding. Why Hayden did not copy this as well is beyond me and that is where the jam hit the fan!

Hayden Darts are however a fact, they will not just “go away” and they are being manufactured again in KZN, with some major modifications such as a BMW rear end I believe, so we will have to accept them. The best form of flattery is after all imitation!

John and Jan Driedijk have enough knowledge and experience of building racing cars and I am convinced that they will transform this Hayden Dart into a machine that will not only be beautiful but efficient as well.

John I wish you luck, and welcome you on our outing with both your Flamingo and the Dart! May you enjoy many happy kilometers of motoring joy!

Kind regards

Piet van Niekerk
