KNOWN HISTORY:

Hugh Carrington ordered the Dart from the GSM factory in about July 1959.  He specified a weight limit of 1,000LBS max, a 1,100cc climax engine, a MGA gearbox and in his favourite colour, light blue.  The Dart actually weighed 985 LBS (448kg) race ready with registration no TJ15507.  Hugh traded the "Gallini" Special in on the Dart.  The "Gallini", a Ford powered Special built on the second of the Lancia Cisaprillias built by Pat Brown (ex Hoffie Le Roux).  It was fitted with a 6 cylinder Ford Zephyr motor and a BMW gearbox.  "Gallini" was a play upon his wife's name Gillian.  Hugh flew to Cape Town to collect the Dart and drove it back to Johannesburg.  He & co driver Ginger Fergusson started preparing the Dart for the nine hour at the Grand Central Race Track on 6 October 1959.  They found the nine inch front brake drums inadequate and fitted twelve inch drums.  The Dart won the 9hr event covering 573,5 miles and making only 8 pit stops, only 3 months after it was ordered from the GSM factory.  Hugh sold #5918 at the end of the 1961 season for R1000.00 to an unknown person who apparently got killed in the car in a road accident.  In the Greg Mills book "The Springbok Series" there is a photo of John Saul & Les Westraad at Kyalami on the 31 October 1964, racing the Carrington Car.  The registration number in the photo is TS15145.
