This Dart was a purpose built race car.
It was first registered in July 1967 (NP 1399) in the
name of Gary Boase. He bought this Dart from Eric von
der Meden who successfully raced this car with Peter
Shekelton. The owner of the Dart before Eric von der
Meden is unknown. The next owner was PD Scholtz who
bought the car in February 1969 NPN 21618. The car was
then sold by a local car dealer
Motor Well to Louise Du Preez (ND 157040) in
1971. The next owner was Brian Less in 1972. It was then
sold to Nico Jacobs in 1973. In 1975 David Hoal
(19 years of age) bought the car and registered
it . ( ND 80.)
Why Chassis was changed on Dart
6343
Eric von der Meden had an accident in the
Dart in 1965 when a Corination brick & tile truck turned
out in front of
him. He spun the car before he hit the
truck and badly smashed the left front corner, twisting
the chassis. At the time
he was very friendly Bernie Podmore and
approached him to
help him cut and straighten the frame. At the time
Bernie was racing an Escort with a Lotus
motor and was going down to Cape Town the next week to
race. He said
he would see Willie Meissner and try and
organize a chassis rather than straighten the old one.
He came back with
a new chassis on his trailer.
Willie Horn did the work on the car along with
Eric. John Rowe test drove the car and
was very impressed with the handling.
Eric then resold the car to Gary Boase in July 1967 and
the rest is history.
