KNOWN HISTORY:
It appears that the Dart was owned by Piet
van der Riet who owned Grobler’s Hardware store in Hercules,
Pretoria. He used to race it in Clubmans races in Zwartkops
Kyalami in the early 70’s. This Dart was advertised for sale in
Pretoria in 1979 at the housing complex of the Pretoria Central
Jail by one of its personnel when Lucas van Wyk bought it. The
car was red with a white hard top. The car was in a bad state as
the rear wheel arches had been roughly cut open with an angle
grinder to accommodate wide wheels. The car had been in several
prangs and the front fenders had been repaired with bits of
plating and fiberglass over the upper part of the shell. Lucas
met Casey Julsing who had a light weight Dart and a Flamingo
with a V6 motor. Casey had a mould for the Dart which he lent
Lucas to rebuild the front section of the Darts body. Casey
later sold his Dart and Flamingo as unfinished projects. Lucas
then took the Dart’s chassis to Mike de Lange who manufactured a
new one. Lucas bought the proper tubing for the chassis at
Andrach in Nigel. The plan is to restore this Dart to its
original state. The body moulding, the bonnet, the nose and the
doors proves to be a 1958/1959 body. (March 2009)
