KNOWN HISTORY:

This 1964 Flamingo was bought new in 1965 with first registration no: NP23411 by Keith Berrington-Smith from Prentice and Spence, the Ford dealer in Commercial Road Pietermaritzburg who later changed to Armstrong Motors at a discounted price as they had it in stock from 1964. He remembers the salesman's name as being Pieter Potgieter. This same Pieter Potgieter was the same person that owned the Cambell Racing Dart # 2. Keith used this car as his daily vehicle till 1969 when he sold it to a young apprentice working for Eskom in the Newcastle area. In 1974 Alan Ash living in Durban bought the Flamingo that had been lying in the backyard of the apprentice now living in Cato Manor in Durban. The car was fitted with a 1600 Kent motor and the bonnet had been painted matt black. Alan set about restoring this Flamingo. He sprayed the car GSM light blue and fitted a original 1500 GT motor and mag wheels. Unfortunately he could not repair the original steering box and therefore fitted a rack and pinion. Alan used the car daily with the registration no: NR 5811 up until 1986. He was tracked down by Mark Joubert who at that time was the secretary of the GSM Car Club of Johannesburg. He made Alan an offer and bought the car. It is assumed Mark sold this car to Peter Watson because in the mid 90’s Rory Webster bought the car from Peter. The Flamingo was totally stripped and in parts. Rory restored the car for his wife Sue who used it daily until it was sold to John Phillips in 2005. By the time John bought the Flamingo it had deteriorated and had to be restored again. This hole car was stripped and rebuilt. A lot of time was spent (possibly more than a year), on the body, which is now perfect. It has now been fitted with a very modified 1640cc motor and 4 speed close ratio gearbox and roll bars for possible future competitive work. (May 2009)
